Prepared specifically for gardeners in four northeastern counties of Pennsylvania, Gardener's Guide focuses on the unique forest systems and habitats on and near the glaciated Allegheny Plateau. Discusses 135 ecological communities on 100 varied regional soils that serve as models for landscape design, as well as how to grow the native plant species of the region. Also included are the protected species of Pennsylvania, invasives of local concern, and resources for native plant enthusiasts in Carbon, Monroe, Pike and Wayne Counties.

About the Author

Geoffrey Mehl comes from several generations of gardening enthusiasts and turned to native plants as problem solvers for difficult landscape situations as well as environmental responsibility. He organized Pennystone Gardens - which has since evolved into The Pennystone Project - in 2003 to concentrate on researching Pennsylvania native plants for both sustainable landscaping and horticultural value. Mehl is active in several environmental and horticultural organizations. This book and the companion website, www.pennystone.com, were produced to encourage gardeners to investigate and use native species in a variety of landscape designs.
